Steam-Flaked Corn: Energy Gains in Feedlot Diets

Steam flaking disrupts the protein-starch matrix of corn, significantly improving its net energy (NE) utilization and enhancing ruminal and post-ruminal starch digestion compared to dry-rolled corn. Consistent outcomes hinge on five key control points: steam chest temperature, adequate steaming time, roll corrugation specifications, roll gap adjustments, and roll tension. Fecal starch (FS) monitoring is also crucial to verify feeding performance.

The actual NE of steam-flaked corn is typically 15-18% higher than industry standard values, with ruminal starch digestibility reaching 80% and post-ruminal digestibility as high as 95% - far exceeding dry-rolled corn. Experts recommend targeting an FS range of 2-3%, which aligns with maximized NE utilization while balancing intake and animal health.

To ensure stable process outcomes, close attention must be paid to maintaining uniform steam chest temperature distribution, providing ≥30 minutes of steaming time at rated throughput, preserving roll corrugation specifications, setting appropriate roll gaps, and applying sufficient roll tension. Adjustments should be made based on FS monitoring results.

Industry experts also call for updating energy evaluation standards to more accurately reflect the nutritional value of steam-flaked corn. Furthermore, precise quality control, particularly through regular fecal starch monitoring, will be a key focus for enhancing the application of steam-flaked corn in feedlot systems.
